TORONTO — Sam Smith, the British singer of the smash hit “Stay With Me,” is no longer dating Jonathan Zeizel.

“We were seeing each other but it’s kind of come to an end,” Smith revealed in an interview Tuesday night in Toronto, where he performed at the Air Canada Centre.

Smith, 22, and Zeizel — an extra in the singer’s “Like I Can” video — had been sharing photos on social media since going public with their romance in December.

But, on Tuesday, the singer confessed on Twitter that he “had a really sad day.”

He also posted a photo on Instagram showing him frowning. “Sometimes you just need to lay in bed with a glass of red wine and a football T shirt and listen to Joni Mitchell,” wrote Smith. “It’s been a sad day.”

In an interview with Maurie Sherman of The Roz and Mocha Show on KiSS 92.5, Smith insisted Zeizel was never, in fact, his boyfriend.

“I was seeing him and everyone made him out to be my boyfriend,” he said.

Smith has been feeling the love of his Canadian fans this week. Following a concert at Montreal’s Bell Centre, he tweeted: “THAT WAS THE BEST GIG I’VE EVER PLAYED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!!!!”

After his Toronto show, he tweeted thanks “for making me feel so much better.” (He plays Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on Feb. 4.)

Smith told KiSS 92.5 being able to perform for fans is the best part about being famous. The worst?

“The press,” he replied. “They lie. Some people lie and they make up things and take things out of context.”

Despite having hit records and earning six Grammy nominations this year, Smith said he’s not typically followed by the paparazzi at home in London. “Which is really, really great,” he said. “And I hope I never am. I get to live my life pretty nicely at the moment.”

Smith said he relishes the thought of being a role model in the gay community.

“I’m actually really touched by that because I do want to be that,” he said. “I’m not that yet. I need a few more albums and to live a bit longer. And I’ve got more to do for the gay community… but that is what I want to be.”

While his heart may be broken, Smith said his body is getting healthier. He is working out and eating well — and hoping to treat fans to a shirtless selfie before the year is up.

“I’m going to Miami at the end of September so that’s my plan,” he said. “I’m going to get naked.”

First, he likely needs to work on an acceptance speech for next month’s Grammy Awards show (at which he will perform).

“I’m not going to jinx it,” Smith said. “I’m excited, but if Beyonce walks off with everything, I’ll understand.”
