Calgary woman says she was attacked because of her religion

A Calgary woman says she was attacked earlier this week because of her religion.

However her alleged attacker has a different version.

Hiba believes her Hijab, which identifies her as Muslim, is the reason she was attacked.

“It’s a hate crime. He was doing that because he hates this religion and that’s why he was attacking me.”

Hiba was dropping her kids off at school in Edgemont, when she says a man pulled up behind her and yelled at her about her driving. She says soon the subject changed to her religion.

“I thought he’s an angry man it’s a racist thing, when he saw me he starts swearing at my religion, at my scarf at my beliefs.”

Hiba says she tried to ignore the man but he pulled up beside her and punched her car side mirror.

Both Hiba and the man reported the incident to police.

The man however, accused Hiba of attacking him.

Community activist Saima Jamal says these kinds of attacks are being brought to her attention more and more.

“Hijab wearing women getting spit at in the mall, strangers coming up to them swearing at them cause they’re wearing a Hijab, they’re swearing about their religion.”

Calgary police say they have interviewed both parties and no charges have been laid. Police say the matter is now closed.
