WATCH ABOVE: Kobani hit by heavy bombardment from coalition airstrikes Friday

The contested Syrian border town of Kobani came under heavy bombardment from coalition airstrikes on Friday.

Multiple explosions could be heard and several large plumes of smoke could be seen from the Turkish side of the border.

Islamic State group fighters launched an assault on the town in September, occupying nearly half of it and capturing some 300 Kurdish villages nearby.

The U.S.-led air assault began on Sept. 23, with Kobani the target of about half-a-dozen airstrikes on average each day, and often more.

In the past month, Kurdish fighters have made more advances against IS in Kobani, leading to a battlefield shift.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the Kurds now control roughly 80 percent of Kobani.
