Managers of Evergreen Line construction defend recent sinkholes

WATCH ABOVE: It was standing room only tonight at a meeting for residents worried about the construction of the Evergreen line. Jeremy Hunka reports.

People behind the construction of the Evergreen Line defended the project in a public meeting intended to assuage fears over two sink holes that formed along the route in last three months.

“I want to provide high degree of confidence…that sinkholes will not appear in the future along the line,” said Jeff Spurston of EGRT Construction to the people at the meeting, most of whom own property along the 11 kilometre line that is scheduled to open in 2016.

According to Amanda Farrell, the Evergreen Line Executive Project Director, both sinkholes occurred when maintenance was being done on the boring machine creating the underground path for part of the Line. While she couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t happen again, she said precautions are always in place to ensure no harm comes from any sinkholes that arise during such maintenance.

“The locations where we’re doing maintenance are very carefully planned away from buildings,” she said. “They’re not under buildings. Although we have had these circumstances…they’re always away from buildings.”
