Police evacuated residents in the area and confirmed in a release Monday there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police.

In a release on Wednesday, RCMP say the suspect pointed a rifle at police who, in response, fired a pistol while taking cover. Several shots were fired by the police and suspect.

Police say investigators are working on determining the exact sequence of events.

He will appear again in court on Thursday for a bail hearing. RCMP say more charges are anticipated.
