Pogo CarShare sees success in Edmonton

Pogo CarShare has seen much success since launching in Edmonton in October. Global News

EDMONTON — Just a few months after hitting the streets, Edmonton’s first car-sharing service is expanding.

“We’ve had great feedback from Edmontonians. A lot of people are really rooting for us,” said Alexis Alchorn, a co-founding partner with Pogo CarShare.

Pogo launched in Edmonton at the end of October and currently has 25 vehicles on the road. The company says 30 vehicles will be on the streets by January and 50 by late spring. Pogo plans to have 150 vehicles available to Edmontonians by the fall.

“We notice that our usage goes up every time we add a new car and also it’s increasing week by week, as is our membership,” Alchorn said. “They use it for the convenience factor.”

Pogo provides members with 24/7 access to a pool of vehicles located within a specific zone of the city, which spans from about 107 Avenue to 76 Avenue and Groat Road to 97 Street. People are free to take the vehicles out of the zone as long as they return them to a parking space within the zone once they’re finished.

“We can’t expand fast enough. People want more cars and they want the zone to get bigger.”

About 1,500 trips have been taken by Pogo members over the past two months.

Pogo currently has more than 350 members. Drivers can sign up to become Pogo members on the company’s website.
