LETHBRIDGE – Many sports teams are compared to families, but even in that context, the LCI Rams boys basketball team is particularly close.
“I love these guys,” said Rams star forward Saren Westrop. “I’d do anything for them and I think that shows on the basketball court. We all have each others backs.”
The Rams have grown up playing together, including an undefeated junior varsity season in 2012-13. Their experiences have forged a strong bond.
“We’re all pretty good buddies so we work together and we like to play together so I think that’s what makes us the most special,” said Rams guard Mason Gibb.

Coach Jared Nelson has watched the Rams closely through the years, and sees something special in his current squad. “What’s neat about this group is even in the off-season, during other sports like football and that they were texting each other and getting together and playing pickup ball and trying to get each other better.”
All of which helps to explain the Rams strong start to the season. After a couple tough losses early, the team has hit its stride, sitting in the top 10 in the provincial high school rankings. It’s nice praise but the team is setting its sights even higher, with intentions on winning zone and provincial championships.
“That can be scary for any coach to start putting the expectations really high for a team,” said Nelson. “But this team especially, they’ve had success at the other levels and I think it’s just kind of been a natural progression.”
This week the Rams are showing off their skills on their home court, hosting the 48th annual Green & Gold tournament. Although the team has higher goals, they’re relishing the chance to play in front of friends and family.
“It should be pretty fun,” said Gibb. “It’s the last time the grade 12s will get to play in this tournament so we’re hoping to go out with a bang.”
Green & Gold tournament games run through to Saturday night at LCI.
