Huskies season hinges on the play of centre Dalyce Emmerson

Watch above: The Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team is looking for Dalyce Emmerson to have a strong second half to the season. Jack Haskins reports.

SASKATOON – After earning the title of Canada West MVP, and defensive player of the year last season, Dalyce Emmerson became a marked woman. Every time Emmerson is on the court, the opposing players key in on the Huskies fourth year centre.

Through eight games the competition has fought to shut down the six-foot three-inch Prince Albert product without success. Emmerson still leads Saskatchewan in points (14.0 PPG) and rebounds (8.0 REB/G).

Those numbers are down a little bit from last season, in large part due to nagging injuries and constantly being double teamed by the opposition. Drawing extra defenders could be frustrating for players who worry about their stats, but for Emmerson, it’s a complement.

“It’s humbling for sure. I mean, it’s never ever something that I thought would happen playing basketball here,” said Emmerson.

Having a player like Emmerson who commands a massive amount of attention on the floor has been a treat for Huskies head coach Lisa Thomaidis.

“It sure makes things easy and if you’re a team mate of hers,” said Thomaidis. “I mean it opens things up so much for you because she draws so much attention, so you can literally stand on the three point line and be ready to knock down open shots.”

On Friday the Huskies will play their first regular season game in nearly six weeks when they travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats. The Cats will provide a solid test for the fourth-place Dogs as Saskatchewan aims to climb the division standings heading into the second half of the season.
