UPDATE: Traffic is now moving again on Highway One.
Highway One in Burnaby was completely closed for eight hours this morning after a semi-truck carrying diesel fuel collided with a car and rolled over.
It happened just east of Willingdon Avenue around 12:30 after the vehicle collided with another car. After the fuel tanker struck the passenger car from behind, the tanker slid along the concrete median for a short distance and flipped over.
The truck driver had to be extracted from the tanker by an off-duty Burnaby RCMP officer. He suffered minor cuts to his hands and was transported to hospital. The officer also received minor cuts to his hands. The driver of the other vehicle wasn’t hurt.
Over a hundred litres of diesel spilled onto the highway, but hazmat crews were able to contain it to the freeway.
Both vehicles had to be towed.
It is not clear what caused the accident. Investigators say there was light fog at the time of the incident, but weather is not considered to be a contributing factor.
No charges have been laid.
