Impact sign Malian central defender Soumare: first pick in MLS re-entry draft

MONTREAL — Central defender Bakary Soumare has signed a contract with the Montreal Impact, the Major League Soccer club announced Tuesday.

The Impact selected Soumare first overall in the second stage of the 2014 MLS re-entry draft on Dec. 18.

The 29-year-old Mali native is a seven-year MLS veteran who most recently played for the Chicago Fire.

Terms of the contract were not released.
