RCMP incident in Bonnyville ends safely

EDMONTON – A police stand off in the east-central Alberta community of Bonnyville ended Sunday night with one man being arrested.

Mounties were called to a residence in downtown Bonnyville around 2 p.m. Sunday regarding a heavily intoxicated man who was in possession of firearms.

The RCMP attempted to speak with the man, but police say he refused to cooperate and would not leave the home.

Mounties called for assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team.

Some neighbours were asked to stay in their basements while others were evacuated.

Police eventually re-established communication with the man, and at around midnight he was arrested.

The RCMP says the man was not seriously injured and no one else was hurt.
