An Ohio family is celebrating a bright Christmas this year.
Homeowner Greg Osterland loves the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and wanted to recreate the Griswold family’s famous light display.
It took him and wife Rachel six weeks to put up 250 strands of lights – the exact same number of lights as the Griswolds. They even have the same trash pile, burned chair and a replica Christmas tree with the same ornaments as the Griswolds.
The only difference? The Osterlands’ lights are all LED and should only cost them an extra $18 on their energy bill.
The Osterlands started planning for this year’s display last Christmas.
“I went out the day after Christmas when all of that stuff was half price,” Osterland told The Wadsworth Post.
He hopes to improve the recreation of the Griswolds’ home next year by getting an RV to park in the driveway like the one Cousin Eddie has in the film.
The outrageous display has attracted many people to drive by and take a look.
Osterland hopes the attention will help him raise $1,000 this holiday season to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Visitors can leave a donation at the house or online.
“I have cystic fibrosis and have grown with the disease,” he said to WKYC. “I’ve known people who have suffered with the disease. My goal is to help as many people as possible.”
