Gift card swapping sites on the rise

If you’re just starting your Christmas shopping, chances are a few gift cards are on your ‘to buy’ list. As gift card popularity rises, swapping websites have popped up over the last few years that allow you to exchange your gift card for one you would like, or even cash.

CardSwap.ca launched four years ago out of Toronto. The site is warning customers about purchasing other people’s gift cards online where they can be found with deep discounts.

“If you buy from Craigslist or Kijiji and the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is,” said Frances Ho from CardSwap.ca. Ho said that if you do get ripped off on these sites it’s nearly impossible to track the person down afterward. Ho also said to double check the cards you buy in store too.

“Take a look at the card, and look at the back of the card and make sure it hasn’t been tampered with,” said Ho. “Make sure none of the pinpads are scratched off and if it looks new.”
