The man convicted in the brutal ‘gas and dash’ killing of a Maple Ridge man is set to be released, and in this case it is his second chance at statutory release.
Darnell Pratt dragged 24-year-old Grant De Patie to his death six years ago.
“I don’t feel very good,” said Grant’s father Doug De Patie. “Me and my wife, it’s hard on us and the family to know he’s getting out and we’re left with a life sentence without Grant.”

De Patie, a gas station attendant, was trying to stop Pratt from leaving without paying for his fuel. He was dragged for blocks under Pratt’s car.
Pratt was previously released but ended up back behind bars when he violated his curfew.
“He was released in the Kamloops area last time,” said Doug, “and I guess he was MIA for a day-and-a-half into his release. He didn’t return at night to the halfway house and was subsequently found, I believe, after an intoxicating day-and-a-half, and was, as in my understanding, in possession of some drugs as well.”
“It wasn’t good.”
Doug said he heard Pratt has some plans to make his way down to Maple Ridge.
“He’s his own worse enemy,” he said.
