Missing northern Saskatchewan youth charged with break and enter

SOUTHEND, Sask. – Five youth who were the subject of a missing person search last month are now facing criminal charges. The five, from Southend, Sask. have each been charged with breaking and entering a place and committing an indictable offence.

The five were reported missing on Nov. 6 after leaving their community two days earlier to go hunting at Reindeer Lake. They were located on Malcolm Island Nov. 10 after a search involving RCMP, Civilian Air Search and Rescue (CASARA) and local volunteers.

Weather at the time was not good, with temperatures ranging in the -10 to -18 range along with strong winds and some snow.

After the rescue, a damage complaint was filed by the owner of a wilderness lodge. Kelly Littlechilds, the owner of Arctic Lodges, told The Canadian Press doors had been kicked in and fishing gear, clothing and all-terrain vehicles were out of place.

Littlechilds stated some of the buildings at the lodge are left unlocked with food inside for anyone who might become lost.

The five youths, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will appear in court on Jan. 29.
