‘Barney’s Version,’ ‘John A’ big winners at Directors Guild of Canada Awards

TORONTO – “Barney’s Version” and “John A: Birth of a Nation” were among the big winners at the 10th annual Directors Guild of Canada Awards on Saturday.

“Barney’s Version,” based on the novel by Canadian author Mordecai Richler, won awards for best feature film, best direction for Richard J. Lewis and best production design.

“John A: Birth of a Nation” which aired on CBC and starred Shawn Doyle as Canada’s first prime minister, also netted three awards – for best television movie/miniseries, best direction for Jerry Ciccoritti, and best production design.

CBC-TV’s “The Tudors,” about the reign of King Henry VIII, nabbed trophies for best television drama series and best direction for Jeremy Podeswa.

Other winners included CBC-TV’s “Heartland,” HBO Canada’s “Call Me Fitz,” and the documentary “Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie.”

Director Ted Kotcheff won the previously announced DGC lifetime achievement award.

CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi hosted the gala at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
