SASKATOON – Three community-based organizations will be receiving a financial boost from the government of Saskatchewan to assist in the creation of new group home spaces in Saskatoon. Officials announced $600,000 in funding Friday towards 15 spaces for vulnerable children, youth and families.

Funds will be divided up evenly amongst the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc., Hope’s Home and Light of the Prairies.

“The fact that there are so many children within the foster care system who have mental disabilities and after they are out of that system where do they go,” said Kevin Martens, executive director of the Light of the Prairies Society.

“What happens to them? So this is a real forward thinking plan and allows them to age in place in their home which could be there home for the rest of their lives.”

According to the provincial government, the new spaces will be for children and families requiring emergency receiving, as well as those with medical needs and intellectual disabilities.
