EDMONTON – Staff at a northwest Edmonton Goodwill location alerted police Saturday after finding a grenade inside a box of donations.
Police say members from northeast and west divisions responded to the donation centre, in the area of 128 Street and 137 Avenue. Staff told police they were going through donations and noticed an item that looked like grenade.
Staff Sgt. David DeMarco with the Edmonton Police Service says the area was cordoned off and an assessment was done on the grenade. He says officers were “able to deem quite quickly that it was inactive.”
“It was of no threat to anybody,” DeMarco said. “I don’t think it was given with any intention to scare or to alarm.”
DeMarco said the assessment showed it was a defused WWI grenade.
Lori Pratt, the director of marketing and fun development with Goodwill, also confirmed to Global News Saturday afternoon that the grenade was not live.
DeMarco says the grenade is now the property of the military.
