Arrest made in 2012 disappearance of Lisa Michelle Mitchell

As Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports, a man believed to be her common law husband has now been charged with second degree murder and indignity to a body.

CALGARY- Police have arrested 38-year-old Allan Shyback from Calgary in connection to the disappearance of Lisa Michelle Mitchell.

Shyback has been charged with second degree murder and indignity to a body. He’s currently in custody and will appear in court on Monday.

Police say Shyback lived common law with Mitchell and fathered one of her two children.

“The children are safe and sound at this time,” Sgt. John Hebert said.“The kids are one of our primary concerns. And that’s why we’ve been very careful discussing these matters but they are being taken care of at this time but obviously they’re going to need some additional resources later.”

Mitchell, 31, was last seen at her in the southeast community of Ogden on Monday October 29th, 2012.

Her family reported her missing to RCMP on November 17th, 2012 after not hearing from her for an uncharacteristic amount of time.

Police say there is a minor domestic history at that residence between the two people involved but there were no charges laid from any of those investigations.

“The suspect in this case was picked up away from the residence. He was picked up out of town,” Hebert said.

A search warrant was executed at the Ogden residence on Friday.

Police say the search located what they believe are human remains.

Mitchell’s mother was notified Friday.

“I think she took the news with a measure of grace considering,” Hebert said.

“There are a number of people we have examined for these investigations and through that investigation we reduce the suspects down to the suspect we currently have in custody,” Hebert said.

Police said they received a number of tips throughout this investigation, including tips as a result of the last media availability which was in late October.

The 31 year old had what most would consider a fairly normal life.

She loved to sing with her girl band and had one job in Calgary. She worked part time on weekends at the Twin Cities Hotel in Longview.
