KELOWNA – The test run of a $750,000 fire suppression system Friday at the Kelowna airport created quite the spectacle.
The entire 28,000 square foot floor of the new Carson Air hanger was blanketed about a metre deep in foam in just over a minute.
A representative of the Texas based company that supplied the system says that’s well within code requirements.

“It went fantastic with excellent coverage from the generators which worked perfectly as designed. The fire code that governs aircraft hangers allows us to have coverage in under three minutes. We hit that in about a minute and ten seconds,” says Joe Tortorici of Ansul fire protection services.
The Carson Air hanger was built solely to park aircraft. The company president says it’s one of three hangers in the province with foam fire protection.
“There has to be a foam fire suppression system when aircraft are stored inside. So it’s either de-fuel the airplanes or have a foam system,” says Kevin Carson.
The test cost about $25,000 and must be repeated every three years.
