Police not to blame for ATV crash off Deerfoot Trail says report

CALGARY- An investigation has concluded the actions of police did not lead to a young woman crashing her all-terrain vehicle (ATV) after taking it for a ride on Deerfoot Trail in October.

On Sunday, October 19, police say a 21-year-old woman who is mentally challenged left her family’s home in Gleichen on an ATV. Her family reported her missing and an RCMP officer later spotted her riding the ATV on a highway.
She eventually ended up going northbound on Deerfoot Trail, where police said they followed her from a distance with their lights on. The woman exited the freeway on the Southland Drive off ramp before crashing into a fence. She suffered serious injuries.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was called in to investigate as is standard protocol whenever there is a collision in the presence of police. On Wednesday, ASIRT announced its investigation found all officers involved did their best to protect the young woman and other drivers during the incident.
“Going 80 clicks on a quad on the highway near Calgary doesn’t happen very often,” said Kassidy Cobbe, who spotted the driver swerving in and out of traffic that day. “I imagine it was very scary for the people headed east.”
No charges have been laid; the young woman has since been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.
