ABC Family crosses the border, with ABC Spark to debut in spring 2012

TORONTO – Canadian television is getting a spark.

Corus Entertainment says it has struck a deal with Disney/ABC Television Group to add ABC Spark to the dial.

The new channel will launch in spring 2012 and feature shows including “Switched at Birth,” “The Lying Game,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Make It or Break It,” “Melissa & Joey” and upcoming series “Jane By Design.”

Corus television president Doug Murphy says ABC Spark will bridge “the gap between our kids and women’s networks,” which include OWN, W Network, Cosmopolitan TV, Teletoon, Treehouse and YTV.

Its target audience is the massive demographic known as the millennials – made up of people aged 15 to 34.

Corus says there are nearly 10 million millennials in Canada, constituting more than 30 per cent of the population.
