Saskatchewan has second-highest murder rate in 2013

OTTAWA – Saskatchewan had the second highest murder rate among the provinces for 2013, according to a report released Monday by Statistics Canada. The report also found Saskatoon had the tenth highest murder rate for Canadian cities.

During 2013, there were 30 murders in Saskatchewan, a rate of 2.71 for every 100,000 people living in the province. That was one more homicide then what was recorded in 2012. Manitoba, at 3.87 per 100,000, had the highest rate among the provinces.

Regina had the dubious distinction of having the highest murder rate among the cities. Nine people were murdered during 2013, a rate of 3.84 per 100,000, up from 2012.

In Saskatoon, the murder rate dropped to 1.67 per 100,000 last year, tenth highest among cities in Canada. There were five murders last year in Saskatoon, down one from the previous year which included one homicide committed in a correctional institute. There have been seven murders in Saskatoon so far in 2014.

Overall, there were 505 homicides in Canada during 2013, 38 less than in 2012, with the murder rate falling to 1.44 per 100,000, the lowest rate since 1966.
