Canadian doc ‘The Exhibition’ wins International Emmy Award

TORONTO — Canadian documentary The Exhibition won an International Emmy Award on Monday night in New York City.

The film, directed by Vancouver’s Damon Vignale, chronicles Vancouver artist Pamela Masik’s struggle to show her collection of paintings of the victims of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton.

Vignale and producer Miho Yamamoto accepted the award from presenter Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson.

The Exhibition was named winner in the Arts Programming category and represented the only win for Canada.

Quebec actor Claude Legault (19-2) lost Best Performance by an Actor to the UK’s Stephen Dilane (The Tunnel) and 30 vies from Montreal’s AETIOS Productions lost the Telenovela award to Brazil’s Globo.

More than 1,000 people gathered at the New York Hilton for the International Emmy Awards gala, which was hosted by British comedian Matt Lucas.

Presenters included Canadian actress Megan Follows (Reign) as well as Mad Men stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, who presented the Founders Award to series creator Matthew Weiner.

Forty nominees from 19 countries competed in 10 categories and the winners represented eight countries.
