Calgary radio station News Talk 770 celebrates 50th anniversary

CALGARY – A local radio station is celebrating 50 years of broadcasting in Calgary.

News Talk 770 (CHQR) first launched on November 17th, 1964, becoming Calgary’s sixth radio station.

“It feels good,” says Morning Show host Bruce Kenyon. “The time zips by so quickly that it kind of catches you off guard.”

Kenyon describes the changes the station has gone through in his 15 years working there as “remarkable.”

“It comes in little spurts here and there,” he explains. “Editing actual tape, we don’t do anymore… everything has become electronic.”

Despite the transformations, Kenyon says that ultimately their goal remains the same.

“What you deliver on the radio hasn’t changed at all, it’s just the type of delivery, the equipment that you deliver it with.”

“The whole idea is to connect with the listener, and I don’t think it matters how you do that or what technology you use, as long as you do that.”

News Talk 770, which is owned by Corus Entertainment, has gone through five different studio locations but currently resides at Eau Claire Market.

They’ve also been through several format changes, switching from music to News/Talk in Februrary of 1992.

Previous advertising campaigns include the slogans “Hippies hate us,” “Listen to your wife and CHQR” and “Listen to your Conscience and CHQR.”
