Small clothing business stunned by devastating robbery

HALIFAX – A local entrepreneur and mother of two children is facing an uncertain future, after her clothing store was emptied during a robbery this week.

“We came in and everything was gone,” said Brittany Connors, owner of Vivacious Vixen Apparel at 6092 Cunard Street.

Sometime Thursday evening, the store was broken into and thieves stole clothing, fabric, electronics, sewing machines and a cash register.

“I feel like somebody personally attacked me. I’m scared to be here alone and I don’t want to leave my only stuff left here,” she said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Connors was preparing to move her store to a new location in Dartmouth. She said with so much movement in and out of the store, it’s possible someone may have noticed the theft but not reported it.

Now, she’s not sure what to do.

“I could open a store with nothing in it, but how would you make money? I have two small kids.  This is the way that I take care of them.”

In the time since the robbery, a crowd-funding campaign has been launched to raise money for the family.

“There’s so many people I don’t even know that have sent me support. It means so much.”

Connors said the one thing that would make her happy now would be to have two stolen sewing machines returned. She had owned one since she was a teenager and the other was a family heirloom that belonged to her grandmother.

She said she doesn’t have any idea what would motivate someone to steal fabric and old sewing machines, and has offered a reward for information about the robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers at 1-(800)-222-8477.
