WINNIPEG – A Manitoba Corrections officer was killed Thursday when a van transporting six prisoners from The Pas to Dauphin crashed.
The Pas RCMP responded to the crash on Highway 10 about 45 kilometres south of The Pas at about 9:45 a.m., a police news release said.
The corrections officer who was driving lost control and the southbound van hit the east ditch, rolled and stopped in the trees, police said.
A 44-year-old corrections officer from The Pas who was a passenger in the van was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they didn’t know if she was wearing a seatbelt.
Police said they believe road conditions played a role in the crash. Snow fell in the area on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old corrections officer who was driving was taken to hospital in stable condition. The six prisoners, all men, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
An RCMP forensic collision reconstructionist is helping to investigate and Highway 10 was still partly closed at 2 p.m.
