A Delta woman is expected to be released from prison today after serving two-thirds of her sentence for impaired driving in a crash that claimed the life of a four-year-old girl.

Carol Ann Berner is being let out on statutory release.

She was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail for killing Alexa Middelaer in a crash six years ago.

She was found guilty on charges of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Berner hit Middelaer and her aunt as they fed a horse at the side of the road in 2008.

Berner’s release is tied to conditions that include getting treatment for substance abuse and abstaining from alcohol.

She was sent to jail in March of last year after an appeal of her sentence was rejected.

Berner withdrew her application for day and full parole in April.
