WATCH: Candidates deny connection to Kelowna Mountain

A controversial Kelowna developer is throwing his support behind a group of municipal election candidates that is calling for the downsizing of the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

The Taxpayers First group wants to slash Regional District operations — saving taxpayers up to $5 million.

That may come as music to the ears of the developer of the Kelowna Mountain project, who has had several legal disputes with the regional district.

Former MLA Carol Gran is one of the Taxpayers First candidates. She’s also a fan of Kelowna Mountain.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I’ve done quite a bit of work consulting with Kelowna Mountain,” says Gran.

But Gran says there is no connection between the company’s conflicts with the regional district and her party’s stand on downsizing the regional district.

“If somebody is trying to make it difficult for Taxpayers First by using this ridiculous conflict of interest, then all I can say is that it’s dirty politics.”

Taxpayers First candidate Dale Olson also had a connection to Kelowna Mountain. He used to sell shares for the project. But he says that was four years ago.

“I’m not involved with Kelowna Mountain. If I was, so what?”

Kelowna Mountain owner Mark Consiglio was not available for comment but he did issue a news release Wednesday afternoon, endorsing Taxpayers First.

“Kelowna Mountain believes that Taxpayers First represents the best interests and a broad platform for all of the citizens of Kelowna, not just a few ‘movers and shakers’ who want to continue to exert their influence over regional politics.”
