Penguin signs Joseph Boyden’s young-adult novel to Razorbill imprint

TORONTO – Penguin plans to publish acclaimed Canadian author Joseph Boyden’s first young-adult novel to its Razorbill Books imprint.

The publishing house says “Turtle Island” is inspired by Boyden’s short story of the same name and deals with gangs, drugs and violence.

It follows a young teen who’s “caught between the rough world of the Indian Posse and his dawning affection for his little brother’s pet turtle, named Island.”

Boyden is the author of the bestsellers “Three Day Road,” which won the 2005 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and “Through Black Spruce,” which landed the 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize.

He’s among several Canadian authors Penguin has signed to the Razorbill imprint, which will launch in Canada early next year.

Other planned releases include novels by Mariko Tamaki, Emily Pohl-Weary, Hiromi Goto, Carrie Mac and Charles de Lint.
