Accused murderer Derek Puffer testifies in his own defence

The man who admits to fatally stabbing Billy and Donna Lee Powers took the stand in his own defence today.

Derek Puffer claims ‘voices’ told him to kill his mother and stepfather.

Local sports legend Billy Powers and his wife Donna Lee Powers were found stabbed to death in their Braeside home in July 2013.

Derek Puffer, appearing in a blue prison jumpsuit, recalled being ordered to act.

“I was commanded at one point to take off my clothes. I was in a complete trance like state by then,” testified Puffer.

“I was told to pick up a knife and go to work.. I started walking in the general direction of where work would be.”

“I was told to go back to the house and stab Bill and mom – go into the room and stab and kill them.”

“I remember hearing stab them and I did, it was constantly repeated…stab them.”

“I was just emotionally detached at that point. I was being commanded to do it.”

Puffer also detailed his battle with mental illness and the persistent voices in his head.

“I just thought I was brain chipped…that someone had inserted a chip in my head,” Puffer told the court.

“I felt like I was communicating with God,” he said.

Puffer told court he’s now stable now because he receives anti-psychotic medication once a month.
