PotashCorp pleads guilty after workplace death

SASKATOON – PotashCorp pleaded guilty in a workplace death in Saskatoon provincial court on Tuesday.

Chris Reid, 28, was killed in 2012 at the fertilizer company’s mine near Allan, Sask. while operating a large piece of equipment.

“Really there aren’t any words or statements or fines that can be paid that can really adequately measure up to the loss that’s been incurred by the family most of all and by us as a company of a valued employee,” said Mark Fracchia, PCS Potash president.

“We accept our responsibility, we accept what happened.”

The judge ruled that the accident could have been prevented and ordered PotashCorp to pay the $280,000 fine.
