EDMONTON – A man who was 17 years old when he beat and sexually assaulted a 62-year-old Edmonton woman was handed a nine-year adult sentence Monday.
The man – whose identity cannot be revealed under a publication ban – will serve six years, two months, and 22 days for the aggravated sexual assault that left the victim with permanent brain damage.
The man received credit for time served.
In Edmonton Youth Court Monday, he said: “I’m sorry for what I’ve done to this family.”
“I just want to say I made a bad decision.”
The 62-year-old grandmother was found on a frozen sidewalk in mid-January. She was hypothermic and naked from the waist down.
The woman had just finished work as a cleaner, and was walking home from the bus stop when she was attacked. She was not found for two hours.
One investigator said she had never seen such a violent attack committed by a youth.
The then 17-year-old offender pleaded guilty to the assault.
During the sentencing hearing, court heard he was drinking on the day of the attack and that he had a long history of substance abuse. Court heard his mother drank and used drugs while she was pregnant and he spent time in and out of group homes.
On Monday, the judge described the now 20-year-old as a “model prisoner.”
The judge was listening to arguments from the man’s lawyer seeking a publication ban on his name. Media were challenging the request.
