Global Calgary celebrates National Citizenship Week

Several members of the Global News team took part in a special citizenship ceremony at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts Thursday morning.

The week of October 13th to 21st marks National Citizenship Week in Canada.

This week alone, there will be over 40 citizenship ceremonies all across the country.

In Calgary, round table discussions focused on what it means to be a Canadian.

Participants looked at the challenges new immigrants often face and provided encouragement for them to share their rich cultural traditions.

The ceremony included 60 immigrants from 24 different countries – all now citizens of Canada – after taking the oath of citizenship.

According to Statistics Canada, in 2010 over 280,000 people in were granted permanent resident statuses in Canada.

Most immigrants came from China, the Philippines and India.
