Temporary shelter on standby for displaced Calgarians, hotels reach capacity

CALGARY – The city has announced the opening of a group lodging site at the Big Four building.

The space has 200 cots, showers, security, and meals provided by the Stampede.

It’s in response to the high demand placed on local hotels because of hundreds of displaced residents. About 60 remaining rooms were available Tuesday afternoon.

Calgary Emergency Management Agency and City Hotels put up about 300 displaced people on Monday night.

“Because of such high business travel [our downtown hotels] are pretty full so we’re working with all the hotels to find rooms and will continue to focus on hotels that are right near the Ctrain lines to make it as easy as possible for the people who’ve been evacuated,” says Jon Jackson with the Calgary Hotel Association.
