Every day heroes: Citizens recognized for saving lives

11 names, 11 stories. The city of Lethbridge and its EMS services gathered at City Hall to recognize the actions of ordinary citizens who were forced to take extraordinary action.

“I think it’s very important that we recognize citizens for going above and beyond what they would normally do in their normal day,” said Deputy Fire Chief, Dana Terry. “They were faced with a critical situation and they made the decision to act and to help somebody that was in need.”

The following citizens have been recognized as Community Heroes:
– Virginia Shaw
– Jim Judiesch
– Marlys Judiesch
– Jeff Merritt
– Kerri Cowie
– Greg Kveder
– Angela Borne
– Seth Baril
– Lorna Murray
– Joseph Palate
– Stephanie Garrett

While all first responders are well trained in saving lives, EMS says it’s also important for citizens to have some basic lifesaving skills.

“When normal citizens take CPR, we recognize that CPR is actually one of the most important links in that chain of survival,” said Terry. “So for the average citizen to actually start CPR, you can have a real significant impact on the life of that individual.”

Stephanie Garrett is recognized as a Community Hero for saving her father's life after he suffered a heart attack.
