WINNIPEG – MTS (TSX:MBT) plans to build a high-speed wireless data network in Manitoba with the goal of making the service available starting next year.
The Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, network will support average user speeds that are up to five times faster than the telecom company’s current wireless network.
The Manitoba telecom operator said Thursday that planning and infrastructure development is already underway and it expects to turn on the first phase of the new network next year.

“LTE will further improve our customers’ wireless service experience by providing increased data speeds, access to exciting new wireless devices and by increasing their ability to access converged multi-media services across MTS high-speed Internet, Wi-Fi, and mobile wireless networks.” Kelvin Shepherd, president of MTS, said in a release.
The wireless industry is moving to LTE technology, which is ideal for streaming video, watching TV and listening to music.
However, devices like tablets and smartphones for LTE networks are just starting to be launched.
Both Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and Bell Mobility (TSX:BCE) have recently started rolling out their LTE networks.
MTS is a division of MTS Allstream Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc.
