Kamloops mother upset her daughter can’t wear non-religious headscarf at school

VANCOUVER – A Kamloops mother is speaking out tonight after her eight-year-old daughter was told she cannot wear a headscarf in school.

Jamie Mitchell is in Grade 3 at Lloyd George Elementary School and was asked last week if she was wearing the scarf for any cultural or family significance.

When she said no she was told she had to take it off, even though she has been wearing it every day since the school year began. But wearing it violates the school’s dress code.

“He was very clear that she had two choices, to not wear it to school, or she was not welcome, she would not be welcome at school if she was wearing her headscarf,” said Jamie’s mom Erin.

Jamie has now taken it off but still has not been given a reason why she can’t wear her headscarf.

“I like wearing it better than just pinning my bangs back,” said Jamie, “it takes a shorter time, it doesn’t take that long and it’s not bothering anybody.”

The principal told CFJC News that Jamie can wear the scarf if she rolls it into a headband and that hats, toques and visors are not allowed in the school’s dress code either.

He did add they are willing to review the policy.

“If they’re saying absolutely no head gear under any circumstances, that should apply to all children, not just some of the children based on what religion their parent practices at home,” said Erin. “Because that’s the definition of discrimination.”
