Crowdfunded transit bus debuts in Toronto

TORONTO – Residents living in Toronto’s Liberty Village neighbourhood have a new transit alternative.

A special crowdfunded bus service made its first run this morning on the busy King Street corridor and will continue all week-long.

It departs four times a day from the corner of East Liberty Street and Pirandello Street and will stop at Union Station travelling on Niagara, Bathurst, Wellington and Front Streets.

The idea was started by a Toronto group called Line Six in response to crowded conditions on the current 504 streetcar route which carries 60,000 riders daily.

“We collected a minimum donation of $25 for the week, so that works out to about $5 a trip if you use it every day,” said Line Six co-founder Taylor Scollon.

“I think people thought that it was an affordable transit option and that’s something we really we wanted to provide.”

Those who have signed up are guaranteed seats on the bus. So far, organizers say between 50 to 60 passengers have registered.

“Assuming the positive response and people continue to be enthusiastic about it, then we’re going to grow this service to as many parts of the city as we can,” said Scollon.
