If you’re looking for local and in-season produce, stock your cart this week with broccoli and apples. For most regions in Canada, broccoli’s run ends in October, and while apples remain in season for a few months yet, an apple (recipe) a day never hurt anyone.
Broccoli recipes
Broccoli is loaded with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium and is a good source of fibre. Broccoli also has a high water content (around 91 per cent), meaning it will help keep you hydrated and fill you up without packing on extra calories.
When shopping for broccoli, look for bunches with brighe green leaves. If the broccoli is starting to yellow, it’s past its prime. Store broccoli in your fridge’s crisper.

Apple recipes
There’s no shortage of apple varieties to choose from at the grocery story, all are a great source of Vitamin C and fibre.
According to Foodland Ontario, you should store a few apples in the fridge, where they should keep for a few weeks. But if you have a lot of apples on hand, store them in a cool, dark place like a cellar. If your apples are starting to turn, chop them up and freeze them for smoothies, or use them for applesauce and pie recipes (see below).
