WATCH: Cop saves deer stuck in hammock

TORONTO – A Wisconsin police officer is being hailed as a hero after saving a buck with its antlers tangled in a hammock.

Deputy Jesse Parker responded to a call in Marinette County Friday after a passerby spotted a young buck frantically trying to free itself from a backyard hammock.

Jim Hruska, who spotted the animal, told WBAY News he watched it for a while thinking the deer would free itself.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It looked like it was getting worse and worse and we decided to call 911,” Hruska said.

When the police officer arrived, it took Parker a few minutes to figure out how to approach the animal.

“Once he broke loose from the other tree, that made life a lot easier cause I just walked him around until he tied himself up to the tree tight and then I was able to hold him there,” the cop said.

The deputy used a knife to cut through the hammock to free the deer.

“He was the hero of the day for sure, he did a wonderful job,” Hruska said.

“My thought process was he could be somebody’s first buck,” said Parker, a hunter. “He could be a kid’s first deer and I wanted to give that opportunity to somebody else, I didn’t want to see him go down like that.”

The buck lived for at least another day.
