CALGARY- Hundreds of family and friends gathered to remember Alvin and Kathy Liknes at their memorial Saturday morning at Calgary’s First Alliance Church.
Alvin Liknes and his wife Kathy and their five year old grandson Nathan O’Brien disappeared from their Parkhill home in June. Police now believe they’re victims of a triple homicide.
Their bodies have never been found.
Family described Alvin Liknes as an original thinker and great listener. He loved to skis, play hockey and coach soccer. He also loved to be an inventor. He took lessons on how to fly a plane and jumped out of a plane. He often commented on his wife’s beauty and loved to walk with her.
Kathy Liknes, Alvin’s wife, was a great friend who always offered help or advice. She had the true spirit of an entrepreneur and was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, mother and granddaughter.
She loved to dance, but most of all she loved to dance with her husband.
Minister John Pentland from Hillhurst United Church had a long relationship with Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their family. It’s lasted over four generations. Pentland said the memorial was meaningful and moving.
“When a tragedy like this happens, the support of others reminds you that you’re not alone. So the people that gathered supported them as they have all summer,” Pentland said.
“The memorial was very worshipful, it was peaceful, there was laughter, there was tears,” Pentland said. “There was a reminder that when this kind of event happens, as I like to say, God’s heart was the first to break and God’s tears were the first to fall.”
Pentland added that Saturday’s memorial brought some closure to the tragedy.

The man accused of murdering Alvin and Kathryn Liknes and their five year old grandson will face a preliminary hearing next May. Douglas Garland faces two counts of first degree murder, and one count of second degree murder.
