Artistic makeover for the 5th Street underpass

It’s a public art gallery like no other.

Panels of “homegrown” art are being installed at the 5th Street SW underpass in downtown Calgary.

It’s part of the City’s their Underpass Enhancement Program.  And it’s getting rave reviews.

“They are fantastic” says Calgarian Connie Hunt, who adds “the landscapes really give you something to focus on.”

Work has already started on the 1st Street SW underpass, at a cost of $3.5 million.

“We are thrilled to be able to showcase Alberta artists while brightening the journey for those who travel through the underpass,” says Dawn Thome, Project Manager with The City’s Planning Department.

The art panel installation is currently in progress and expected to be complete by Sept. 30, 2014.
