CALGARY – A dog owner has been charged after a woman suffered a serious dog bite to her face Thursday.

On September 18th, officers were called to a home in Radisson Heights on reports a woman had been badly bitten by a dog.

Animal & Bylaw Services says the woman will require surgery. Officials suggest, on a scale of 1-6, with 6 being death, this was a level 5 bite.

“There was a lot of damage to the cheek,” says Damian Cole, manager of South Operations.

“It will require plastic surgery.  A level 5 bite is a concerted attack to a person and this is what happened in this case.”

Animal & Bylaw Services took the pit bull into custody where it will undergo a mandatory ten day quarantine. A behavioral assessment will follow.

The owner has been charged with an Attack Causing Severe Injury and having an Unlicensed Dog.

A court appearance is required in all serious aggressive dog incidents and consequences are determined by a judge. These consequences may include fines up to $10,000.

“Animal & Bylaw Services makes public safety a top priority and aggressive animal behaviour will not be tolerated,” says Damian Cole, manager of South Operations.

“Under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, owners are held responsible for the behaviour of their animals and people must be aware of these responsibilities when looking to add a dog to their family.”
