KELOWNA, B.C. – The Cooper’s grocery store on Highway 33 in Kelowna was evacuated Friday afternoon after acrid smoke descended from the ceiling.

While a roofing project at Plaza 33 was a potential source of the smoke, an investigation by the Kelowna Fire Department found a heating and cooling (HVAC) unit on the roof may be to blame.

The store remains closed until technicians can be brought in to assess and fix the HVAC unit.

About 20 Cooper’s employees were waiting out the closure in the parking lot, while about 35 shoppers had to exit the market.

The fire department cleared the scene with no reports of injury.
