CALGARY – A man charged in a violent double homicide in Penbrooke Meadows is expected to appear in court on Friday.

Hari Pal is accused in the stabbing deaths of his 36-year-old ex-wife Sanjula Devi and her 29-year-old friend Fahmida Velji-Visram.

It’s alleged Pal killed the women while they were collecting some of Devi’s belongs at a home along Penbrooke Drive on May 4th.

Pal has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.

He still doesn’t have a lawyer, and was turned down by Legal Aid.

Another lawyer, Andre Ouellette, has applied for Pal to have his defence funded by Alberta Justice.

Alberta Justice maintains they use in-house lawyers, and say a hearing needs to happen to ensure the case meets proper criteria for state funded counsel.

A judge could then order Alberta Justice to pay, or stay the charges. Pal may also end up having to defend himself.
