No Whitecaps farm team for New Westminster

New Westminster has said no to a Whitecaps farm team citing concerns about the escalating cost of the project and the tight time frame.

The team announced in July it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of New Westminster towards bringing a United Soccer Leagues Pro franchise.

City council voted against a proposed plan to refurbish Queen’s Park Arena Monday night.

Councillors say the rental fee on the facility wouldn’t cover the renovation costs.

Council cited a nearly eight million dollar funding gap for the proposed 11.4 million dollar soccer pitch.

This included costs for relocating displaced baseball teams.

The Whitecaps may now be looking towards Surrey, which is reportedly interested in offering the farm team a new home.
