Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond out for season

OTTAWA – Canadian Olympian Kaetlyn Osmond will miss the fall figure skating season with a broken right leg.

The 18-year-old from Marystown, N.L., underwent surgery on Friday at Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton. She was hurt during a practice session when she swerved around another skater and fell, fracturing the fibula in her leg.

Osmond, a two-time Canadian women’s champion who finished 13th at the Sochi Games, will be sidelined for at least six weeks and has withdrawn from Skate Canada and Trophee Eric Bompard on the Grand Prix circuit. She still hopes to defend her Canadian title early next year.

“I really appreciate all the support I’ve received from our medical team at Skate Canada and at Misericordia,” Osmond said Monday in a statement. “I’m obviously disappointed to miss the early part of the skating season, but I will look forward to getting back onto the ice and training again. I certainly hope to be competing in Kingston at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in January.”
