Bear spends hours perched in tree in southwest Calgary

CALGARY- A young black bear caused a chaotic scene on Friday morning, after a homeowner spotted it up in a spruce tree.

Around 7 a.m., someone spotted the bruin outside a home on Bayshore Road, triggering a police response both on the ground and in the air.

“Basically this time of year they’re looking for food anywhere they can find it. They’ll get food from the trees around us, they’ll find food, pet food, sometimes people’s garbage,” explains Fish & Wildlife officer Len Lupyczuk. “He’s doing what bears do, trying to get some fat on him before the winter hits hard.”

After shutting down the road, officers came in with a bear trap and tranquilized the bear. After several hours of nervous waiting, the bear finally fell about six metres onto the bark below.

Residents are miffed about why the bear ventured into their community in the first place.

“It’s not even garbage day on our street, so it’s not like there’s garbage out for him to look for,” said Quinton Molnar. “We don’t have bird feeders or anything, so I don’t know what he was looking for.”

The bear has since been taken to a remote area outside the city.
