The Westbank First Nation (WFN) are teaming up with the RCMP to combat illegal drug activity on WFN land.

In July, the WFN chief and council gave a third reading to amendments to the Safe Premises Law, which addresses the issue of medicinal marijuana licenses.

The amendments make the federal regulations that authorize the issuance of medical marijuana licenses ineffective on WFN lands.

This move effectively means the production, sale and consumption of marijuana for medicinal purposes is not allowed on WFN lands.

RCMP have agreed that there will be a grace period during which officers will not necessarily lay charges against those who carry a medical marijuana license, however any such activity is illegal and subject to the provisions of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Criminal Code.

The initiative is meant to keep WFN lands a drug-free zone.
